REO Company began as a family owned gift business in San Francisco in 1967. The founding family had been in the silver business for several generations. To better supply its own retail operations it began to import jewelry from abroad as well as work with known local artisans and jewelers. The retail businesses continued to flourish but the wholesale business grew so fast that it became evident that they could not continue to do both. The decision was made to divest themselves of the retail operations. REO's identity crisis averted, the wholesale business was free to grow. Trade shows became a vehicle for the company's exposure. The company moved to larger facilities. Sales representatives were hired in all major markets and catalogs were available to all customers in smaller markets. Customers were happy to deal with a small local company with a good customer service record and Sterling Silver was becoming a hot commodity! As REO continued to grow so did its design and production facilities. Production was moved offshore but our own unique look continues to be designed on our offices. REO maintains an excellence in design, quality control and customer service. We are still small....so you can always find an "ear" and we do listen. For new designs Reo also relies on suggestions from customers, museums, and you.

How do I get 10% off?
Reo calculates your 10% discount after your order is entered. Since the actual transaction doesn’t take place over the Internet (extra security), Reo’s staff does it manually when your order is entered into the computer system.

How do I attach charms?
Most charms come on what is called a “jump ring”, which is simply a wire bent where the ends meet to form into a ring. The ends are not soldered together so a jeweler can attach the ring to a chain link and then solder it closed. Your charms will fall-off the “jump ring” unless it is soldered closed. Non-jewelers remove the “jump ring” and replace it with a “split ring”. “Split-rings” resemble a key chain where the ends of the wire overlap. This attachment method is a safe and easy way to semi-permanently attach charms. Reo can provide you specialized split-ring pliers to make the job faster and easier. Reo provides sterling silver and nickel “split-rings”. Nickel is stronger and more flexible.

How do Italian links work?
1. Insert tab on bronze link tool into slot on link
2. Once the tab is inserted into the slot, turn the tool 90 degrees away from the link (this should open up the link)
3. Put down the link and tool (should stay attached and open)

The next section is easiest with a link that has a sterling silver dangle rather than a flat blank link

4. Using your thumb and index finger open the slot of a new link enough to insert link attached to the tool (doesn’t take a huge opening)
5. Pick up the link attached to tool, the two links attach easiest at a 45 degree angle
6. Once the two links are attached, turn the bronze tool 90 degrees towards the link and remove
7. Repeat until you have created a beautiful one of a kind bracelet

Can I get custom work?
Yes. Just provide us with a detailed drawing or photo of what you want Reo to make along with a one-time non-refundable design fee of $200. The first production run is approximately $600 minimum, and the number of units produced will depend on the individual cost per unit. You will receive a “sample” of your product within 45-days of when we receive your picture and mold payment. After you approve the “sample” it takes an additional 60-days to receive the production goods. The designs we manufacture for you are your exclusive product and are not resold by Reo ever.

Our lawyers have asked us to remind you that we are not seeking any unsolicited ideas, suggestions or materials related to the development, design, manufacture or marketing of our products. We have been in this business for over 37 years and have discovered that most ideas have either been thought of already or we have employees working on the same or similar ideas already. This may seem unfair, but it is intended to avoid confusion about the ownership of new ideas and concepts and to help protect you. If you send us any proposed ideas or other such information, you understand that it will be treated as non-proprietary and non-confidential, and it will become the sole and exclusive property of REO and may be used by REO for any purpose whatsoever, commercial or otherwise, without compensation.

Origins of Silver.
As early as 3,100 B.C., ambassadors from Crete were already bringing silver vases as gifts for Egyptian rulers. The metal's popularity has even influenced our languages and customs. A silver spoon has symbolized great fortune and privilege since the 17th century when the Spanish writer Cervantes cleverly acknowledged that not everyone was born with one in his mouth. The tradition of the "silver anniversary" dates back to Germany where it was customary to present a silver wreath to a woman after 25 years of marriage. .

Definitions
Sterling Silver Defining the Elements
Silver is an element that occurs naturally in the earth and is generally considered too soft in its pure form for practical use in jewelry, giftware or flatware. An alloy such as copper or nickel is usually added to make silver workable for jewelry. Only jewelry that is at least 92.5 percent pure silver can be called or labeled "silver," "solid silver," "sterling silver," or "sterling." If one of these terms is stamped on the silver jewelry you are purchasing then the piece meets the U.S. government standards. Sometimes, a piece will be stamped with "925," ".925," or "92.5." These are also appropriate markings and they assure you that you are buying genuine sterling silver jewelry. Coin silver is labeled as "coin silver," "coin," "900," ".900," or "90," signifying that the piece contains at least 90 percent pure silver. Sterling Silver must be 925.

Coin Silver
Coin silver is 90 percent (900 parts) pure silver and 10 percent (100 parts) alloy metal. As its name implies, coin silver was used to produce U.S. currency during the 19th century. It is no longer a commonly used material.

Vermeil
Pronounced "vermay," vermeil is a French word describing sterling silver that has been electroplated, (gold plated), with at least 100 millionths of an inch of karat gold. Only items meeting this definition can be labeled "vermeil."

Silver Plate
Any item that is silver-plated must be labeled as "silver plated," "silver coated," or "plated with silver." In addition, the silver plating must be of sufficient thickness to ensure durability. If you're purchasing silver-plated items, inspect the piece to ensure that the plating is of the appropriate thickness and covers the entire piece. Think of an M&M, Silver-plate may be coated over almost any material underneath. Each manufacturer decides how to finish their jewelry. Plating the sterling silver with fine (99.9%) silver is a customary way to finish jewelry in some countries. This process is commonly called "flashing." Often a flashed piece of jewelry will also have a layer of nickel or copper plate between the two silver layers. Additional common plating methods used are rhodium plating, gold plating and anti-tarnish plating. One of the reasons manufacturers plate sterling silver is to restore the even, consistent color lost as a result of "firescale," the discoloration of silver caused by soldering findings and posts onto the jewelry. All of these plating methods give the jewelry a longer, brighter life. However, these items cannot be sized or machine buffed without being re-plated.

The following is a general indication of what types of finishes are used today. Countries with "not plated" may plate individual items using one of the methods mentioned above.
Mexico: Not Plated
Indonesia: Not Plated
Thailand: Not Plated, anti-tarnish
Poland: Not Plated
China: Plated, Flashed
USA: Not Plated, anti-tarnish
Israel: Not Plated
Italy: Plated, Flashed

Flatware
Silver knives, forks, spoons and various serving utensils are commonly referred to by this term.

Holloware
Silver tableware which is larger than flatware and is designed to function as containers and decorative pieces. This category includes bowls, vases, serving dishes, trays and candlesticks.

How to Buy Silver Jewerly and Gifts
The silver content and quality of all silver jewelry and gift items must be accurately represented. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has established a set of stamps and markings to represent silver content and you should look for them when making a silver purchase.

Tarnish
Silver in its pure form will not tarnish, but is too soft for use in jewelry and giftware. Sterling silver will tarnish. This is not a defect, but the result of a natural chemical process that occurs when sterling silver is exposed to chemicals in the air. Other common tarnish causing elements are wool, rubber bands, and latex gloves. Humid environments will accelerate tarnishing. The best way to prevent tarnish is to actually wear your sterling jewelry or use your silver items often. However, don't wear sterling silver in chlorinated water or when working with household cleaners such as bleach or ammonia. Treat your silver well and it will actually develop a lush patina and will reward you with a lustrous look.

How should I care for my Sterling Silver?
Preventative maintenance is the easiest way to keep your sterling silver looking great. Avoid exposing your sterling silver jewelry to direct sunlight, harsh chemicals like chlorine, cosmetics, hair spray, perfume, and perspiration, and keep items in sealed polyethylene bags when not being used. Washing your jewelry periodically with mild dish soap and warm water is a quick, easy way to prevent tarnishing. Be sure to rinse well and dry completely with a soft cloth before storing. Frequent light polishing with a cloth designed for use on sterling silver will also help minimize tarnish. Tarnish is easily removed when first noticed (generally a yellowish tint) but will become more difficult to remove as it turns brown and eventually black, requiring professional cleaning and/or harsher chemicals that can harm your jewelry. We highly recommend our treated Polishing Cloths. They will restore the original luster and shine to your silver jewelry.

How much to pay
Silver jewelry and gift items are priced based on their precious metal content, design and craftsmanship. A price based solely on weight and metal content does not reflect the work that has gone into the piece. Each piece of silver jewelry is unique and, if cared for properly, can last a lifetime. When purchasing a piece of silver jewelry or a silver gift item look for quality construction. Inspect the piece carefully. Pay special attention to fasteners or clasps, making sure catches work easily but are secure. Pin backs and earring posts should be strong and firmly attached to the piece with no visible marks. Lay silver chain flat to make sure the links don't kink or bend. For gift items, make sure that hinges, locks, picture stands and other items are securely attached and function properly.
